Tannery closes in Minas Gerais
05/11/2008
Local media in Brazil have reported that a tanning company called Braspelco in Uberlândia in the state of Minas Gerais has closed down with the loss of over 600 jobs.
The company had been part of the Bertin Group since April this year. The Bertin Group said that it has examined the international leather market and had decided that it could meet immediate overall demand using its own existing tanneries. There were reports of returning Braspelco to its former owners, but newspaper O Correio also said Bertin would work out redundancy packages with staff in the Uberlândia facility, with the possibility that some might be offered work at other tanneries.
Calls from leatherbiz.com to the tannery could only confirm that the site had closed and that the Bertin Group was the owner.
