Argentina’s main leather sector trade union, SOC, has claimed that businesses across the industry there have laid off more than 1,000 workers in recent weeks with the global financial crisis the main reason.
The union’s general secretary, Walter Correa, has told local media: “We cannot put up with this and we are calling on the ministry of employment to start protecting jobs in the leather sector and to find the resources to give laid off workers proper compensation.”
