Government prepares rescue package

The Indian government is looking for ways to help leather and textile exporters cope with problems connected with the credit crunch and with the depreciation of the rupee.

According to reports, the finance ministry discussing new measures that would ease pressures on already struggling exporters as redundancies become increasingly common. Approximately 2.5 million people are employed by the sector, but with orders declining there are fears that many jobs could be lost if new incentives are not introduced, and soon.

However, the government is sticking to the $200 billion export target it set for the year, claiming that the figure is still achievable.
