Pakistan’s leather exports rise

According to Pakistan’s Federal Bureau of Statistics, the country’s leather exports grew 13.4% in September to $96.2 million compared with $84.8 million in August. Exports rose 4.4% compared with September 2007, up from $92.1 million.

The breakdown showed that the country exported finished leather worth $25.8 million, leathergoods worth $59.9 million and footwear worth $10.5 million compared with $23.8 million, $48.8 million and $12.3 million, respectively, in August. This signifies an 8.4% increase in finished leather and a 22.8% rise in leathergoods, but a 14.6% decline in footwear month-on-month.

Total leather exports for the July to September period rose 1% to $283.4 million compared with $280.6 million for the same three-month period last year. During this period, Pakistan exported 4.4 million m² of finished leather worth $83.4 million compared with 5.9 million m² at $ 97.5 million in the prior-year period, a decline of 26.5% in quantity and 14.5% in value.

Leathergoods exports from July to September were worth $163.6 million (including leather garments worth $125.2 million, leather gloves worth $35.8 million and other leathergoods worth $2.6 million) compared with $153.5 million in the corresponding period last year, a rise of 6.6%.

The country also exported four million pairs of shoes worth $36.4 million (including leather shoes worth $32.2 million) compared with 3.5 million pairs at $29.5 million during the same period a year ago, a growth of 23.4%.
