According to reports, Vietnamese footwear exports for the first nine months of 2008 totalled $3.6 billion. It is thought that the country is now on track to meet its annual shoe export target $4.5 billion.

It is estimated that the country currently has approximately 450 shoe manufacturing plants with a collective production capacity of 500 million pairs. The industry provides employment for around one million people, 90% of whom are women aged between 18 and 25.
