Foot-and-mouth disease outbreak

Veterinary doctor with the Ecuadorian Cattle Sanitation Service (SESA) Luis Escobar, has revealed that foot-and-mouth cases have been found in Ecuador. "An outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease has been detected in the Río Blanco region of Pilahuín," he says. "Of the head that have been examined, four are infected. We have put a quarantine scheme in place and are vaccinating the animals in all the surrounding areas."

All cattle in the region are being examined and SESA representatives are asking breeders to collaborate by vaccinating their herds regularly.

According to the National Foot-and-mouth Disease Eradication Commission, all Pilahuín cattle have received the necessary doses of vaccine, but some breeders disagree.
