Marfrig leases meat-packing unit in Uruguay

A meat processing plant in the Uruguayan town of Fray Bentos, formerly run by Noblemark, has been leased by Brazilian meat-packing company Marfrig to produce canned beef.
The company expects to process 3,600 five-kilo cans per day, enough to fill a container. The raw material will be supplied by the four productive units that the group runs in Tacuarembó, Salto, San José and Colonia.
“It is important for the group and for Uruguay that this unit resume operations after being idle for so many years,” said Héctor Suárez, a technician at the Noblemark unit.
During the first month, the unit is expected to produce 20 containers of canned beef for the UK market. At a second stage, the unit will also target the US market and start production of frozen cooked beef in the near future.
