Leather recovery plan already under discussion in León

03/10/2008

The mayor of the Mexican city of León, Vicente Guerrero, has spoken of the need for citizens there to keep a positive attitude in the face of the global economic crisis. He said there was a need for caution, but that people should be confident that León, and the whole of Mexico, can come through the present difficulties.

He said that leather and footwear, along with the apparel and automotive sectors, were the industries that had been most immediately affected by the crisis and assured local people that the city would hold discussion with business representatives to try to put recovery plans in place.

He pointed out that such a dialogue had already begun with the leather sector, which has already seen some tanneries and leathergoods manufacturing business close, a loss of jobs and a fall in exports.
