Possible breakthrough in tannery dispute
30/09/2008
A court decision in Buenos Aires on September 30 may help bring to an end a dispute at the former Cidec tannery in the town of Hurlingham, 23 kilometres west of the capital.
Cidec was a world famous and successful tanning group, but ran into difficulties at the end of 2006. The workers eventually formed a cooperative to continue producing leather there, although question marks continued over their right to use the building and the machinery.
The most recent court decision is that ownership of the facility should pass, in name only, to the town of Hurlingham, with the workers' cooperative having the right to rent it and continue production. The news has been well received by the workers, who have been occupying the site as a protest.
