Leather's share of domestic market passes 40%

According to new figures from the Chinese authorities, sales of leather shoes in the domestic sector now account for 41% of the overall footwear market.
In recent years, the share of the market that leather footwear had was less than 10%. The authorities attribute recent growth to a migration towards middle and high-end shoes among Chinese consumers, including those in rural areas.
Many consumers are now prepared to pay between €20 and €30 per pair for shoes, and in the coastal cities of the east of the country, where prosperity levels are higher, €30 would be a normal price to pay, officials have said.
