Action on tannery waste
24/09/2008
The authorities in the city of Haining in Zhejiang province south of Shanghai have reported the successful launch of a project to recycle waste material from tanneries.
There are eight tanneries in Haining generating 120 tonnes of waste every day. Concerned about pollution to soil and underground water resources, the Haining Science and Technology Bureau launched a programme to improve the situation.
Two academic institutions, Nanjing Agricultural University and Zhejiang University of Technology, bid successfully to work on the project and have now set up a research group and a pilot plant to recycle waste chrome and other potentially harmful substances. They believe they will be able to process the material that remains into organic fertiliser.
