A move in China to produce more and higher quality finished leathergoods appears to have confirmation in figures showing a huge decline in exports of finished and semi-finished leather (see leatherbiz, September 18, 2008), but substantial increase in exports of bags and other leather travel goods.

Figures for the first seven months of this year show an export value of travel items, luggage and bags to have reached $7.55 billion, a growth of 26.3% over the corresponding period last year.

The rate of growth in this part of the leather industry is running at 3.6% a year.

Proving also the growing importance of the Chinese domestic market for the entire global industry, imports of goods in this category reached $300 million over the same period, an increase of 70% year on year.
