GDS opens

With the importance of the footwear industry to the leather sector increasing in the wake of a slow-down in upholstery, the GDS event in Dusseldorf, which opened on September 12, is of particular interest this year.
The organisers, Messe Dusseldorf, encouraged exhibitors and visitors to be optimistic, in spite of pressures in the footwear sector in Europe, urging designers and manufacturing companies to keep innovating and being as creative as possible. This, they said, would be a way of keeping consumers' interest high.
A total of 1,269 exhibitors from 40 countries travelled to Dusseldorf to present their new shoe and bag collections for the spring-summer 2009 season.
