Tunisia makes progress

Tunisia's central bank has issued figures showing that the leather sector was an important contributor to economic growth there last year.

The economy grew by 6.3% overall in 2007, a better growth rate (by 0.8%) than in the previous year. Inflation averaged out at 3.1%, but this was 1.4% lower than in 2006.

There was also an improvement in the unemployment figures, with 80,000 new jobs being created, which means unempoyment was 14.1%, down slightly from 14.3% the year before.

The bank said leather, along with the energy, machinery production, textiles and services (inlcuding 7 million tourists) were the best performing sectors.
