The Italian fashion world is mourning the death of designer Mila Schön. The Milan-based, Croatian-born designer died near Turin on September 4 at the age of 89 after an illness that had lasted several months.

Ms Schön opened her first boutique on Milan’s Via Montenapoleone in 1966 and launched her first ready-to-wear collections, including leather bags and shoes, in 1971. Leathergoods continued to feature prominently among her designs.

On learning of her death, the president of Italy’s Chamber of Fashion, Mario Boselli, said: “We have lost one of the pillars of 'Made in Italy’.”
