New technology for detecting fake leathergoods

Swiss-based technology provider AlpVision is offering new hope to leathergoods manufacturers whose businesses suffer from counterfeiting.

First developed to protect metallic and plastic parts for the Swiss watch industry, domestic electrical appliances and automotive parts, the company’s Fingerprint technology can now also tell the difference between genuine leather parts and fake ones.

The process uses a standard scanner and normal light to capture an image of an object. This image is stored in a secure server for later comparison whenever needed. The server contains the digital prints of genuine objects. Sophisticated mathematical algorithms allow comparison of millions of images in seconds, enabling police or retailers to see immediately if an object is genuine.

This eliminates the time delay and the cost of sending a suspicious object back to the brand owner for examination by experts.
