Proof of growing links with Africa

Ocean-borne freight between China and Africa of manufactured products—including leathergoods—is on the rise.

Proof has come in a report that specialist publication Shipping Digest has put together, using information from China’s People’s Daily.

In the first seven months of this year, the eastern port of Longkou in Shandong increased its shipments of goods—including
leather products, cement, machinery, electronics, chemicals, textiles and garments—to 41 African-bound loads.

In July, shipping line Safmarine started a monthly vessel service from Zhangjiagang, China’s largest river port, and Tianjin, the country’s second-largest general port after Shanghai, directly into West Africa. The service calls at ports in Angola, Cameroon, the Republic of Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, São Tomé and Principe, South Africa and Togo.
