Argentinian investors to set up abattoir in Soriano

A group of Argentinian investors has shown great interest in setting up a new abattoir in the western Uruguayan department of Soriano, the local municipal administration has said.

The building of the old municipal slaughterhouse which has not been used for years is likely to become the premises of the new company. Soriano is the Uruguayan region currently producing the largest number of cattle for slaughter.

Total investment would be between $12 million and $14 million. The project requires some 15 hectares of land and is expected to generate 350 jobs; 500 cattle would be slaughtered daily and all the beef produced would be exported.

Delegates from the Uruguayan Beef Institute who have held meetings with the investors have said that they belong to a powerful group operating in Argentina’s beef sector and that they know their line of business very well.
