Leather shipments suspended in Karachi

27/08/2008

Leather garment exports bound for Europe and other destinations were suspended at the port city of Karachi, Pakistan, because of a transporter strike last week.

Chairman of the Pakistan Leather Garments Manufacturers & Exporters Association, Fawad Khan, revealed that leather garment consignments worth approximately $12 million were left sitting at factories belonging to six or seven exporters as a result of the strike.

Mr Fawad urged the state and local government to put an immediate end to the transportation issues so that these strikes would cease. By the seventh day of the strike, trade activity was paralysed and the supply chain was thoroughly disrupted, according to Mr Fawad. Furthermore, customers were asking for the goods to be shipped by air, adding additional cost to exports.

Strikes have since been called off.
