Indian leather representatives explore options in Ethiopia and Egypt

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the All India Skin & Hides Tanners and Merchants Association (AISHTMA) and the Indian Finished Leather Manufacturers & Exporters Association (IFLMEA) recently organised a delegation to Ethiopia and Egypt. The aim was to build stronger ties between the nations by exploring new opportunities for the leather sector.
CII chairman, Habib Hussain, said the visit helped build new relationships and that the Indian leather sector regards Ethiopia and Egypt as important strategic partners.Indian Ambassador in Ethiopia, Gurmeet Singh, said that Ethiopia offers a great deal of opportunity as it is rich in raw materials but has low labour costs. Indian companies would offer technology and capital.
The members also visited The Egyptian Leather Association and a few tanneries during their visit to Egypt. President, AISHTMA, Rafeeque Ahmed, said the tanneries in both countries had unique advantages and that Indian companies could set up manufacturing facilities or joint ventures in Ethiopia or increase leather sourcing from Egypt.
