Government commissions effluent plant
Minister for rural development and local administration in the government of Tamil Nadu, Muthuvel Stalin, commissioned an Rs280 million common effluent treatment plant (CETP) at Tiruvalarchipatti on August 17. Local residents had been voicing concerns about ground water contamination caused by effluent from leather factories in Sembattu, on the edge of the city.
Tannery owners contributed part of the total investment, while state government also made a substantial contribution. The CETP will be used by eight local tanneries which collectively produce 18 tons of skins and hides per day.
