Indian government backs leather scheme
The Indian government has approved the implementation of the Indian Leather Development Programme which aims to boost already growing leather production and to address environmental concerns.
The scheme will inolve an investment of more than Rs912 crore ($212.6 million). It will help to generate employment and will lead to the development of the sector’s infrastructure. Funds will also be used to facilitate training and to upgrade technology.
According to reports, the Indian leather industry is growing at approximately 20% per year. Exports, which are experiencing double-digit growth, account for more than a third of the industry’s turnover, which is estimated to be Rs400 billion.
