Leather and textiles are key to economy
According to recent statistics from the Zarqa Chamber of Industry, industrial exports from Jordanian towns Zarqa and Mafraq totalled $43.7 million in July compared with just $32.4 million in July 2007. The leather and textile industries were particularly influential in July, accounting for approximately 59%, or $25.9 million, of total industrial exports. Zarqa is the country’s second largest city, situated to the north east of Amman, and accounting for around 15.5% of the total population. Mafraq lies close to the border with Syria to the north and Iraq to the east.
