Leather production increases
Pakistan has registered a growth of 7.8% in the production of leather during the month of May, processing 1.8 million square-metres, compared to 1.6 million square-metres in May 2007.
According to data released by Federal Bureau of Statistics, the country also produced more than 3 million pairs of footwear during the same month compared to 2.6 million pairs in May last year, a growth of 18.2%.
On a commulative basis, Pakistan's total production of leather for July-May 2007-08 (the first eleven months of the last financial year) stood at 19.3 million square-metres, from 17.2 million for the same proportion of the previous financial year.
The production of footwear stood at 23.9 million pairs from 22.1 million pairs. But there has been a decline (of 22.9%) in the production of sole leather.
