China's longest established Special Economic Zone, the city of Shenzhen in the southern province of Guangdong, is to establish a special business park for the leather sector.

Focusing specifically on fashion and creativity in the leather sector, the new facility will mirror similar enterprises that the city has already set up for nine other industries.

In announcing the development, the Shenzhen Trade and Industry Bureau said the city was at the forefront of the leather industry in China with more than 1,000 companies related to the leather sector.

The mayor of Shenzhen, Xu Zongheng, said that the government supported the idea and pointed out that "traditional industries" such as leather still represent 46% of the city's economy. He said the authorities there recognised the need to help industries such as leather increase their competitiveness.
