Uruguay looks at leather loophole
Official news sources in Uruguay have suggested that the country could use a free trade agreement it has in place with Mexico to gain duty free access for its leather and leathergoods to Mexico's North American trading partners, Canada and the US.
Diplomats from all the countries involved are said to have held in-depth talks on the subject.
Mexico's ambassador to Uruguay, Cassio Luiselli, said the key would be for Uruguayan companies to take a share of at least 60% of joint-venture firms in Mexico. This would allow them to move their products around the North American Free Trade Agreement countries without restrictions.
He listed leather, meat, rice and dairy companies as the ones most likely to benefit.
