Chemicals company Lanxess has reported the news that its site manager in South Africa, Johan Lotter, and his wife died as the result of an attack at their home near Durban on July 19.

Mr Lotter had worked at the Merebank plant, where Lanxess makes chemicals for the leather and rubber sectors, since 1990.

Axel Heitmann, chairman of the board of management of Lanxess, said: "It is with dismay that we learned of this shocking deed. We are deeply troubled and will work with the authorities in South Africa for successful resolution."
