BASF announces Shanghai plans

Chemicals manufacturer BASF has released details of its plans for the All China Leather Exhibition, which will take place in Shanghai from September 3–5.

It has said it will be focusing on “innovative products and processes that offer distinct ecological and economic advantages”, as well as displaying a range of established products for use at all stages of the leather production process.

It has singled out two new product ranges as the highlights of its display at the event: Densodrin EP and Lepton Aquatop TG.

Densodrin EP is the first product of a new generation of the Densodrin range. It combines more than 30 years’ experience and research and development on the part of BASF. The Ludwigshafen-based company has used “new chemistry” to create the product and says that, as a result, the dyeability is more even and the product is more stable during applicaton, especially in hard water. Furthermore, it produces dry surfaces, making finishing easier. When it comes to environmental friendliness, the company says Densodrin EP is a big step forward and recommends it for all types of leather, especially shoe uppers, which require high performance (the ability to withstand the Maeser-and Bally -Penetrometer tests, for example).

Applying Lepton Aquatop TG in the top coat will offer a simple but effective means of obtaining transparent finishes with high gloss, BASF has said. The product can be combined with many others. With casein binders like Luron, it should be possible for tanners to achieve very glossy surfaces and transparent finishes. Results in wet-rub fastness can be increased by adding silicone waxes and by using crosslinking agents. BASF also insists that the product offers “an excellent price-to-performance ratio”. It can be used for all kinds of leather, but is especially recommended for shoe uppers, furniture and garment leather.

New products from the Lepton and Relugan ranges that have been specially developed for the Chinese market will also be on show.

On announcing the information, Joachim Henkmann, head of BASF’s leather business in East Asia, emphasised the growing importance of sustainability and the environment. He said: “All our products and processes focus on environmentally friendly and economical solutions. Our customers expect and demand high-quality ecological products that meet their individual requirements. Our new Lepton and Relugan ranges will satisfy these demands.”
