Day-trippers flock for luxury shopping
23/07/2008
The number of people visiting Hong Kong for a single day from mainland China has increased by 22.2%, with shopping for luxury leathergoods and clothes the principal attraction.
The Hong Kong Tourist Board, in announcing the figures, said visitors from China were attracted by the Special Administrative Region’s zero sales tax and favourable currency exchange, which combined to make goods such as handbags and leather shoes from Gucci, Vuitton, Dior and other premium brands more affordable than on the Chinese side of the border.
In 2007, day-trippers from China spent an average of $235 each in Hong Kong’s shops.
