Russia bans kangaroo meat

The Russian authorities have imposed a temporary ban on imports of beef and kangaroo meat from Australia after claiming to have found restricted and harmful substances in a sample.

Australian media have suggested that the move will affect one beef operation and three kangaroo processing plants, but a spokesperson for an industry body representing kangaroo meat exporters has said only one of these three processing plants had been notified.

The government quickly launched talks with Russia, which in recent years has grown to become Australia’s fourth largest export market for beef.
