Tanning sector ‘ignored’

The Pakistan Tanners’ Association (PTA) has complained that the country’s commerce minister has ignored it in the country’s new trade policy initiatives.
PTA chairman S M Naseem said his organisation had supplied detailed information about how the leather industry could and should feature in the plans, recommending that the minister earmark research and development and training support for the tanning sector, financial help for tanneries that are aiming to build effluent treatment plants, and guarantee uninterrupted supply of water, gas and electricity.
All that the trade policy review included in the end was an agreement to set up loans for tanners to build treatment plants and to share the cost of consultancy for carrying out benchmarking studies in the leather garment export sector.
