Exports up by almost 20%

Pakistan’s total leather sector exports rose during last financial year (July 2007–June 2008) rose by 19.3% to $1.2 billion from $1.02 billion in same period last year, according to data released by the country’s federal bureau of statistics.

The main buyers of leather from Pakistan were Hong Kong, Italy, China, Korea, Germany, Vietnam, Turkey, Spain and South Africa.

The breakdown showed that during the fiscal year the country exported 23.8 million square-metres of tanned leather bringing in total revenues of $412.3 million, showing growth of 11.6% and 15.5% in terms of quantity and value respectively.

The country exported leather garments worth $529.6 million and leather gloves worth $149. For all leathergoods excluding footwear growth was 24.05%.

Pakistan also exported 13.6 million pairs of footwear worth $123.9 million, with leather footwear accounting for $104.8 million of that total.
