Pig cull in Vietnam

17/07/2008

The Vietnamese minister of agriculture and rural development, Cao Duc Phat, has ordered a cull of pigs in the Quang Tri province of the country. The province is suspected of having suffered an outbreak of blue-ear disease.

Mr Phat said sick pigs must not be treated. He said the longer pigs suspected of having blue-ear disease were kept alive, the greater the risk of the epidemic spreading, which could have devastating repercussions for the meat industry in Vietnam, he suggested.
