Bovine slaughter falls

16/07/2008

Argentina slaughtered 10% fewer cattle in May compared to a year ago, the National Bureau of Commercial Husbandry Control (ONCCA) has said.

The reduction is believed to be the consequence of the successive cattle breeder strikes held since March when slaughter fell 39% compared to the same period the previous year. However, it grew 24.5% in April when the strike ended.

For 2008 so far, Argentina has slaughtered just 0.7% fewer head of bovine cattle than last year but May's steep fall has caused alarm. Commentators are concerned that a growing number of cows being sent to the slaughterhouse may be an indication of herd reduction. In May, 50.7% of the animals slaughtered were cows. In May 2007, this percentage was 47.3%
