Official status
15/07/2008
The Geographical Indications Registry of India’s ministry of commerce has granted exclusive geographical product status to East India leather.
The status will apply only to vegetable-tanned leather produced for footwear and garments by tanneries in Tiruchi and Dindigul in the state of Tamil Nadu. Small-scale tanners in the area have been using the same methods to produce leather for more than a century.
Industry bodies there have said they hope this development will open up export markets—especially in Europe—for East India leather.
