While the value of beef exports grows as a consequence of the increase in international prices, leather is enjoying less positive results in Brazil. Leather exports dropped 4% in the first half of the year to $1.07 billion compared to the same period of 2007, the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB) has said.
In June, the main destinations for Brazilian leather were China and Hong Kong with $ 333 million—a share of 19.9% and 11% of Brazilian leather exports and a reduction of 16% and 4%, respectively; Italy with $293.3 million (a share of 27.3% of volume and a reduction of 8%, if compared to the same period of the year before); and the US (9.7% share and 9% reduction).
According to CICB, crust and finished leather had the best performance in the period with an increase of 76.9% in monetary terms and 64.9% in volume.
