Brazil ups the ante in beef with Europe

11/07/2008

Brazil's Chamber of Deputies has voted to abolish the cattle identification system the country has in place.

One of the deputies, Ronaldo Caiado, explained that Brazil had a new project for carrying out cattle identification and said the previous system went too far. He argued that this had led to unnecessary impositions on the meat industry in Brazil and had allowed demanding markets such as the European Union.

Mr Caiado went on to suggest that Europe had used the previous system as a means of putting obstacles in the path of Brazilian beef exports.

The EU banned imports of beef from almost all Brazilian farms at the start of this year because, it said, the systems in place failed to offer sufficient guarantees that the farms were free of foot and mouth disease.
