Instability over beef continues

09/07/2008

The backlash from a decision in April by the new Korean government to lift a ban on US beef imports continues.

On July 7, President Lee Myung-bak sacked three of his ministers, the politicians responsible for agriculture, welfare and education.

A month-long boycott of parliament by the main opposition party has now ended, but public unease about eating US beef—banned from Korea since 2003 after an outbreak of mad cow disease—is ongoing. There are still almost nightly public protests about the decision and restaurants have been obliged to identify the source of any beef they serve.
