Leather sector employment falls
09/07/2008
Figures just released for employment levels in Brazil’s manufacturing sector show an overall rise from May 2007 until May 2008, but the leather sector, including footwear manufacturing, shows a decline of 11.9%.
Across the board the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (IBGE) found that manufacturing jobs in the country were 2.1% up on a year ago and that wages had gone up by 7% over the same period. Leather was one of six sectors (out of 18) to show a fall. Textiles and apparel manufacturing were also down.
