China leather exports a mixed bag

During the first four months of this year China’s leather sector has recorded growth of 9.7% in exports, with a total of $7.8 billion compared to $7.1 billion for the same period last year. The figures come from official data from the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA).
The breakdown showed that the country exported accessories worth $3.8 billion (an increase of 24.9%), leather shoes worth $2.76 billion (a small increase of 0.9%) and footwear components worth $477.3 million (growth of 42.4%).
On the negative side, exports of leather garments fell by 4.8% to $199.9 million, leather gloves by 13.7% to $194.9 million, raw hides by 38.2% to $0.8 million and leather equiment by 4.6% to $17.9 million.
Over the same period, China imported leather and leathergoods worth $2.2 billion showing a growth of 1% from the same period last year.
