Leather trade can help Brazil cut trade deficit with China
04/07/2008
China has become the biggest consumer of exports from the Brazilian agribusiness sector, from third largest last year, leading the authorities there to suggest that Brazil is on the way to reducing its trade deficit with China.
China imported goods from the sector worth $3 billion in the first five months of the year, a rise of 86.6% compared to the same period last year.
Soy beans represented around 60% of this total, but bovine leather and hides come close to the top of the list with exports of $413 million, only slightly behind cellulose, which accounted for $423 million.
Brazil says it intends to triple exports to China in this sector and has launched a specific project to promote Brazilian goods in 619 categories.
