John Lennon's leather necklace up for sale

03/07/2008

A specialist rock memorabilia auction website, gottahaveit.com, is preparing to sell a choker necklace made of leather, beads and stones, that used to belong to John Lennon.

The organisers of the auction have said the item was a souvenir the late Beatle picked up in India, either in Delhi or in Rishikesh while the band was visiting the country in 1967. They hope it will fetch $500,000 when the auction opens on July 21.

Reports suggest John Lennon wore the necklace constantly throughout the late 1960s, but it is most famous because he wore it for the photograph that appeared on the cover of 'Two Virgins', the first album he made with his second wife, Yoko Ono. The cover was controversial because the leather necklace was the only thing that he was wearing.
