Natuzzi appoints new CEO

Leather upholstery producer Natuzzi has appointed a new chief executive.

The company, which in May said it would cut its workforce by 1,200 jobs for a temporary period owing to a decrease in orders, tough exchange rates and a weakening global economy, has asked Aldo Uva to take the position.

Mr Uva, a former executive at Parmalat, Indesit and Sara Lee, joins from consumer products manufaturer Nestlé, where he was global vice-president for beverages.

He told media in Italy on announcing the move that his plan for Natuzzi would be to focus on rationalising production costs and boosting sales in key markets.

"
We'll focus on increasing our sales volumes in crucial markets like Brazil, Russia and the US, where our commercial presence isn't strong enough at present," Mr Uva said. "We face increasing competition from low-cost producers and unfavorable exchange rates. We will do it by investing in new production techniques (and our ability) to boost efficiency and cut costs."

Natuzzi is also participating in a task force with other Italian manufacturers to request tax concessions from local government and the national government in Italy.
