Rwanda Leather Industry, a hides and skin processing company, is set to start exporting crust and finished leather by August.

The development comes after the company invested in new tanning machinery. Chief executive, Gitau Wamukui, said that the equipment, imported from Italy through a Dutch agent, will have capacity to produce 35,000 hides and skins monthly.

Rwandan wet blue is exported to India, China, Hong Kong, Kenya, Italy and Pakistan. Italy is the best buyer and the industry in the African country hopes Italy’s influence will help it make a broader impression on the European market.

Niyamathulla Jalal, a quality control and production expert, has been hired from India to train the local workforce. “Rwanda Leather Industry is a fast growing company and has a bright future. I am confident that it will penetrate the European market,” he said on taking up his position.
