Minister keeps his word as ‘pirate’ cattle are seized
26/06/2008
Following an announcement in May by Carlos Minc, Brazil’s minister for the environment, that the government would combat deforestation by seizing cattle in illegally cleared jungle areas, 3,000 head have been seized in Altamira, in the northern state of Pará.
The animals are in the custody of the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Natural Resources (Ibama), and will be auctioned, with the money raised going towards feeding poor people.
This is the first time in the history of Brazil when cattle has been seized in the name of environmental protection.
