No closure at Vernon tannery

19/06/2008

Leatherbiz ran a news item on June 6 relaying reports from Paraguay that the Vernon tannery near the capital city Asunción had closed because of complaints about its performance in waste management. This is not the case. We apologise to Sadesa, owner of the tannery, and to our readers for the confusion.

A small spillage did occur at the tannery that day, but the company moved immediately to clear it up. At no time was the local environment exposed to harmful or toxic substances.

The Vernon tannery runs a state-of-the-art waste water treatment plant, in which Sadesa has invested several million dollars. The Vernon facility has won recognition worldwide for its environmental practices. It also has an approved environmental licence, which the local authorities renewed as recently as March 2008.
