Call to extend preferential treatment
17/06/2008
Exporters in Bolivia have expressed enthusiasm about a proposed fourth extension to the Andean Trade Promotion and Drug Eradication Act (ATPDEA).
The present arrangement, which gives duty-free access to the US market to legal exports from four Andean countries—Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia—expires on December 31.
The chairman of the Bolivian National Chamber of Exporters, José Ribero, said his organisation would be in favour of a proposed new extension, the fourth since the act came into force in 2002.
Mr Ribero said he could see no real alternative to ATPDEA if Bolivian companies want to have access to the US market, which he pointed out was the biggest in the world for a list of important products for his members, including leathergoods, as well as wood, jewellery and textiles.
