Tanners join in with budget protest

16/06/2008

Pakistan’s tanners have added their voices to those of the country’s leather garment manufacturers and exporters in criticising provisions for the industry in the government’s federal budget for financial year 2008–2009.

The chairman of the Pakistan Tanners Association, Mr S.M. Naseem, has expressed his concern over the budget, saying the government failed to take into account any of the concerns the leather industry had raised in the build-up to the official announcement on June 12.

Mr Naseem said the budget contained no incentive for the leather industry, but that several factors that would prove punitive to the sector had been included.

He urged the federal finance minister to review the budget to favour genuine leather exporters.
