The strange case of an employment inspector’s visit to a tannery could end up in court.
Federal ministry of employment inspector Jane Pedroso first went carry out some checks at the Qualidade tannery in Campo Grande in the state of Mato Grosso at the start of June. She explained during this visit that books recording inspections of some of the equipment in the tannery were missing.
Local media have reported that the tannery owner, Jaime Valler, asked for some time to put the paperwork together, but that, when Ms Pedroso went back on June 11, she was refused entry. She then went to summon the assistance of no fewer than eight officers from the federal police force and two from their colleagues in the military police, who returned to the tannery with her.
They lated quoted Mr Valler as saying that everything had been caused by a misunderstanding and that he had presented the correct documents to the inspector, receiving confirmation from her that everything was in order. He added, however, that he intended to present a complaint about her heavy-handedness to the courts, accusing her of “abuse of power”.
Ms Pedroso responded by saying she wanted to wait for the right moment before giving her version of events.
