Pork exports up by 52%
US pork is enjoying a good year in the export market. In April the meat set a new one-month record with 175,640 tonnes of pork and pork variety meat exported, with a value of $391.5 million. This beat the previous record of 156,959 tonnes, set in February this year, by 12%.
For the first four months of 2008 total pork exports are up 52% cpmpared to last year. The total for the year so far stands at 629,682 tonnes, with a value of $1.4 billion.
“US pork has set export records for 16 consecutive years, and there’s no sign that the world’s appetite for it is slackening one bit,” said Erin Daley, manager of research and analysis for the US Meat Export Federation on announcing the figures.
Japan is still the top market with total pork exports up 17% on last year. There has been even more growth in demand from China and Hong Kong, where US pork exports are 311% higher.
